We visited the Hapuku Lodge in February 2026. We stayed 3 nights but could have easily added another day or two. The place is tranquil and the scenery is breathtaking. There are so many positives about this place. The dining experience is wonderful- the chef and team are exceptional. The staff is outstanding...accommodating, friendly and efficient. I highly recommend this lodge, you won't regret it.

Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses is one of those rare places where nature, comfort, and hospitality come together effortlessly. Set in a beautiful, peaceful landscape with deer freely roaming the property, the lodge feels immersive from the moment you arrive. Waking up surrounded by greenery and wildlife makes the experience feel deeply connected to New Zealand itself. The rooms are exceptional. Spacious, thoughtfully designed, and incredibly comfortable, they offer both privacy and a strong sense of place. After a day outside, the sauna and pool are a perfect way to slow down and fully relax, with views that make you forget time altogether. The service is warm, attentive, and genuinely caring without ever feeling intrusive. Dining here is a highlight in itself. The food is outstanding, seasonal, and beautifully prepared, turning every meal into part of the experience rather than just a necessity. Little touches make the stay even better, like being able to rent bikes directly from the lodge and explore the surrounding area at your own pace. Hapuku is not just accommodation, it is a complete experience that stays with you long after you leave.

World class views, facilities, rooms, food, and most of all, staff! The setting is spectacular, with stunning Big Sur like Mountain views on one side of your room, ocean on another side. Excellent 104 degree stone hot tub, 94 degree lap pool in a green natural setting, sauna and spa. Breakfast and dinners included and top quality. Chefs were fantastic, even taking two lobsters we had bought on the drive down from Blenheim and cooking a dish to be added to our dinner. The bucolic property is full of birdsong, with sheep and deer grazing in the fields where resort trails will take you down to the ocean. Rooms were super modern and elegant, with automatic bidet toilets, automated shades, internet tv, fast WiFi, fireplaces, balconies, amenities. Staff was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating, always searching for ways proactively to improve the stay, add an amenity, arrange a booking. The free stargazing tour by Rachel was especially noteworthy, with her taking astrophotos which she sent us later which were museum quality to remember the wondrous night. We will absolutely return, drawn to Kaikōura’s considerable attractions by this destination resort.

I hardly know where to begin describing our one-night stay at Hapuku Lodge. We never could have imagined such beauty. We spent three weeks in New Zealand and stayed in around 15 different accommodations – but this one surpasses them all. Our stay in the Piwakawaka tree house was unforgettable: the view over the deer park on one side and the sea on the other, the handwritten postcard congratulating us on our wedding, the fireplace, the Japanese toilet, the heated floor. We fell in love instantly – and we made sure to make the very most of that brief stay. First stop: the spa. We treated ourselves to a relaxing massage each, and Taylor was incredibly welcoming and professional, pampering us and relaxing us to the point of falling asleep on the table. Probably the best massage we’ve ever had – especially when you consider both Taylor’s care and the surroundings. Second stop: the garden. We took a walk through the lodge’s large vegetable garden, where the ingredients for the restaurant meals are grown. My wife was chased by a group of chickens – which was hilarious. Third stop: the restaurant. Our stay included a three-course dinner, but thanks to Nathan – the lodge’s cheerful, multi-talented staff member – we were able to try small portions of the entire menu of the day, with each dish better than the last. The same goes for breakfast: by far the best we had in any accommodation or resort during our time in New Zealand. Checking out with Emily – friendly and wonderfully kind – was genuinely painful, but we promised ourselves we’ll return one day to that little tree house at Hapuku Lodge. Fun fact: We fell so in love with the Piwakawaka that it became the symbol of our honeymoon.
