Fyffe House
Fyffe House:
Uncover centuries of history at a former whaling station house on the stunning Kaikōura coast. Fyffe House was literally built on the back of whaling – the initial single storey cottage, which became the wing of the larger home, rests on piles of made from the vertebrae of a mighty Tohora (Southern right whale). By the end of the visit, you’ll have gained valuable insights into the full history of the place including the whaling industry, and a vivid sense of the lives of three families who inhabited the house between 1844-1980.

Beautiful location for a lovely historic building. We only had 30 minutes to look around before closing, but the custodian was very friendly and knowledgeable. Amazing garden and great history.

Well worth the $10 entry fee! Very interesting history. Self-guided but a volunteer (?) spent about 10 mins at the start giving us an overview. Given her accent (Scottish?) I suspect she wasn't born and bred here but her knowledge was impressive and conveyed a deep level of understanding. Highly recommended.

Third time here now over the last 10-15 years…always a fun thrill seekers ride (not too crazy) Simple set up yet effective. Definitely pays to go during off season or in cooler weather as there are little lines. One star deducted as it’s fairly expensive for what it is, there are 4 runs and if you want to do them all you’re over 150$ pp…adds up quickly with multiple children (no child pricing). Find a coupon if you can, they’re rare. The spa pools at the bottom are great to warm in, there is one at the top for while you wait but it was closed on the cold day we were there for some reason. Other than your bank account you won’t regret stopping it, pleasant staff all around.
