Puhi Puhi Reserve & Campground
There is a map of the area and a sign for the start of the walk at the campground. Since this walk is a loop track, start in whichever direction you’d like when the track splits.
Taking the left side of the fork, you will be closer to the water of the Puhi Puhi River, while the right track is flanked by forest. The furthest point of the track reaches the Puhi Puhi River close to the Puhi Puhi Bridge which you will have gone over when driving to the start of the walk.
You may be able to hear the water rushing by during your walk but the majority of your time will be spent gazing at the trees and not at the water. Matai and kahikatea trees are found in the Puhi Puhi Scenic Reserve and some are estimated to be over 1000 years old. They are huge trees so there’s no way to miss them!

Lovely, slightly small campsite (filled up to 6 groups on a Sunday in November). Excellent views nearby, limited facilities but still some tables to enjoy your camping treats!

Tent camped, encountered NO ONE! No public, ranger, or cars. Online check in is easy. $15 Sound of river is nice (very close walk), heard only a few cars during the night, the area is quiet and bathrooms clean. Picnic tables was a nice benefit Parking area would be kind of rough if it was really busy though. There’s a legendary spot under the trees. You can see how many people are checked in online, more than 6 might start being a little crammed.

We loved staying here at Puhi Puhi Campground. Traditional DOC camping, no frills here but it's absolutely stunning, we woke to snow on surrounding mountains and there is a great wee loop track backing on to the campsite with great bird life. Close enough to Kaikōura but far enough away all the same.

Toilet is stinky but otherwise great little spot, gravel road is in good condition, says 6 spots but there was about 15 different campers so arrive early to set up. Lovely stream a few mins walk from site to cool off and collect water to filter. Amazing resource, thank you DOC!
